Portugal / the selling league

Identical wiring to the Netherlands — champion into the Champions League, cup winner into the Europa League, bottom two down — but a different business model. Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP scout South America before anyone else, win at home, and sell to England at a profit.

💰 Selling Isn't Losing

In US sports, losing your best player is a disaster. In Portugal it's the plan. The big three buy young — often teenagers from Brazil and Argentina nobody in England has scouted yet — develop them, showcase them in the Champions League, then sell for many times what they paid.

The trick is that the money comes back as the next batch of signings. A club can sell its best player every single summer and still get stronger. Half the stars you'll watch in the Premier League came through here first.

🦅 Os Três Grandes

Benfica (Lisbon, red, enormous membership), FC Porto (the industrial north, blue-and-white, permanently aggrieved) and Sporting CP (the other Lisbon club, green hoops, the academy that produced Cristiano Ronaldo) have won nearly every title between them.

The resistance comes from Braga, who play in a stadium carved into a rock quarry, and Vitória SC in Guimarães — the city where Portugal itself was founded. Beating one of the big three there is the season for those clubs.
